This is a collector’s quality Blue Zircon, a stone of such incredible depth of color, size and cut as to make it not just a beautiful item, but a truly rare museum piece. Zircons are a unique natural stone, and are a stone with some of the most double refractivity; meaning every single facet produces two reflections, instead of most stones which will produce only one reflection. Simply put, that feature of Zircons makes them super sparkly! This stone is set into a cool yellow gold vintage mounting with large brush-finished fleur-de-lis shoulders, and even prongs which echo the fleur-de-lis shape!
Blue Zircon was the original birthstone for the month of December, and was a popular gem until the 1930’s when it was thought to have been mined out. Although it is still found in small quantities of small gems, large stones are very rare on the current market. This particular stone is old dealer stock, Zircon that was mined, faceted and cut in the early 1900’s, but was never set into jewelry. We purchased a parcel of these stones from a retired gem cutter a few years ago and are slowly working them in to our inventory of antique mountings.
