This antique cameo is exquisite, a truly gorgeous piece of workmanship from the 1800’s. Carved of perfectly delineated black and white stone, the portrait depicted is sheer perfection, a woman with a Greco Roman profile and carefully intricate braids knotted at the back of her head.
This can be worn as a brooch, or as a pendant. A name (possibly of the cameo maker) is etched into the back of the stone. The name appears to read: Juniah.
Cameo is the art of carving a layered material, creating a portrait or landscape with the difference in the colors. While traditionally done in shell, banded onyx has been used in cameo work – particularly in Greece and Italy – for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
Love this piece but want to make it more versatile, we here at Market Square Jewelers along with our master metalsmiths can convert this fantastic brooch into a necklace or pendant for an additional fee, please contact Alex for more information!
